Hot, Hot, Hot

OK, for you all that don't live in the Southern California desert, let me give you a little update on how our weather has been lately.

Friday it was 105 F, Saturday was 104 F, and Sunday was 98 F. Currently today, Monday, it is 101 F. Now for you metric people, that is 41 C, 40 C, 37 C and 38 C . In case you don't understand, it's HOT here. So hot in fact that it drove us out of our little town for the weekend. We drove to Malibu on Saturday and enjoyed a perfect day at Malibu beach. The surf was great so we got to see lots of great surfing. The sand was cool and the kids loved digging in it. I enjoyed watching all the interesting people go by. No, we didn't see any celebrities. We did stay the entire afternoon and then had a nice dinner at a sidewalk deli in Pacific Palisades. Now that would be a nice place to live. Quaint, quiet, clean, and cool. Unfortunately, the "normal" looking houses probably cost over a million. It was fun to dream for an evening.

As we were driving home, we got a call from some friends of ours that live in Norway. They were in Orange County on vacation and wanted to know if we could come down on Sunday to swim with them. Of course, knowing it would be another HOT day stuck in the house, we jumped at the chance. We had a great day with Stole, Christine and their three children. We swam at the local community pool, went to the amazing Barber park in Irvine and shared 2 meals together. Their kids have grown so much since we last saw them. In fact, this was the first time our kids actually played "together". In the past, they seemed to not bond so well. Maybe David is just more outgoing this year. It was fun to see them interact. In fact, David grew quite attached to their 9 year old boy, Lucas. It will probably be several years till we see them again. We wish we lived closer. We just seem to have so much in common with them.

All in all, it was a great weekend enjoying the cool weather. Back to the grind here in the hot Inland Empire today.

Our swimmer boy!

We enrolled David in swimming lessons for the first time this summer at the university pool complex. We have been swimming there since David was a year old, so he is pretty familiar with the water. But, he has always been a bit scared of letting go of us and actually swimming. He was starting to get the hand of letting go and trying to swim when we went on our cruise back in April. Well, now he was so ready to swim. This class was 45 minutes long, 4 days a week, for 2 weeks. He just loved it! He had no fears whatsoever in the water. He did all that the instructors asked of him. He started learning the freestyle stroke, he learned how to swim to the bottom of the pool to retrieve things, and he learned how to float. I think he spent more time underwater than above! He was the best student in the class. He should move up to the level 2 class in July. We are so proud of him!
This is his swim instructor, by the way.
